When Buying Health Insurance in Ohio here are 10 things to remember.

If you have health coverage, never cancel it until you have another policy in place.

Unless a policy premium is not paid, an Ohio health insurance carrier cannot cancel your coverage.

Comprehensive health insurance in Ohio includes coverage for doctor visits, hospital stays, x-rays, lab tests, some therapies and usually preventative care and prescription medications.

Medicare provides coverage to people usually 65 or older. A Medicare supplement plan can be purchased to offer a more comprehensive coverage.

Guaranteed issue insurance and Health discount cards - coverage through a discount card is not health insurance. These plans usually do Not require underwriting and simply discount the cost for medical services when received from certain doctors and other providers. Health discount cards and guaranteed issue plans can save you money but they do not have the same quality of protection as health insurance. Always real the agreement as The Ohio Department of Insurance has limited authority over these plans.

Short-term health insurance, Student Health Insurance, Disability insurance, and Cancer insurance are NOT comprehensive health insurance. These plans only protect you against certain conditions and for a certain amount of time. While these can be great products, they are Not comprehensive health insurance.

When Buying Health Insurance in Ohio, the law does not require health policies to cover prescription medications. Many retailers do offer low prices on generic medications, but brand name drugs can be very expensive when paid out-of-pocket.

Except in emergency situations, most health policies require you or your doctor's office to tell the insurance carrier before you check into a hospital or get out patient surgery. Insurance companies call this pre-certification and it determines whether your hospitalization is a medical necessity.

Above all things remember, one single day without health insurance coverage and lead to complete financial devastation. Medical bills in the hundred thousands are not uncommon throughout Ohio. A person's retirement can disappear from the onset of a severe illness.

Health insurance covers the costs of keeping you in good health and getting you healthy if you are injured or become ill. Without it you are left to your own demise.

"Being self-employed I need high quality medical insurance for my family. My agent showed me how an HSA works and now I have the UHC HSA 100. My health insurance policy also give me the benefit of saving money and deducting it from my taxes...."
